SUMMER 2015 "SUNSHINE PLEIN ARTISTS" PAINTING PLAN
April 2, 2015

Greetings all:

Here is the schedule of dates and sites for our coming Plein Air season. Plans and directions (GPS addresses where possible and/or driving hints follow). We have discussed these dates with the hosts. At one time or another we have been to each site, and believe that a fine summer is ahead. Note that the Niven Farm is a state park and a fee might be required. Likewise, Ashland Nature Center appreciates a $2 donation.

In picking these sites, we considered the usual needs - interesting subjects, ample parking, shade, accessible t0 restrooms and, where we can, being close enough to be sociable. The dates/times are all Tuesdays except Nancy Fredrick's which is Monday and are usually 9:00 to noon or exhaustion. Personal needs are that everything brought in is taken out (including all painting liquids), bring your drinking water, sunscreen, hat and protection from ticks and other insects.

Although the vast majority of participants are members of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, this is not an OLLI activity - rather an independent, self-managed program.

Also, as a courtesy, please use TO SENDER ONLY if you feel the need to respond to this document. It will go to Emily Reed, who is kindly managing the large distribution list.

Our planning team: Nan Jackson, Emily Reed, Mary Lou Hamilton, Cree Hovespian, and Jim Miller.

Tuesdays, May 19 and 26 GOODSTAY GARDENS

2700 Pennsylvania Ave, 19806.
These are on the Arsht Hall grounds - just south of the barn and studio buildings. Peonies, iris and tulips will be in season. map

Tuesday, June 2 only. - ASHLAND NATURE CENTER

3511 Barley Mill Road, Hockessin, DE 19707 - 302-239-2334
Directions begin at the intersection of Barley Mill Road and Center Road (Rt #141).Go north on Barley Mill Rd for 4.7 miles to the intersection with Brackenville Rd. Turn right for less than ½ mile to the entrance, just before the red covered bridge. Parking is on the left. map

Summer day camps go all summer, which means that arriving a little AFTER 9:00 is good so as to not be in the way of parents bringing children until then. If you are doing their trails, stay alert for poison ivy and nettles.

MONDAY, June 8 only. - NANCY FREDRICK'S FORMAL GARDENS AND PONDS

1472 Ashland Clinton School RD, Newark DE, 19707 (Nancy has warned us that some GPS directions lead to a cemetery, so also listen to the following road directions)
From Yorklyn go south on RT #82 near the Ashland Nature Center's right turn. About 50 yards before that turnoff is Ashland-Clinton. Go left for a mile and the BLUE 1472 mailbox is at their entrance.
From Kennett Pike, directions begin at the intersection of Old Kennett Pike and Kennett Pike #52, at the light at the entrance to Winterthur. Ashland-Clinton is 2.1 miles on Old Kennett Pike. Turn left for one mile and look for the anti-deer fencing and the blue mail box.

Entering their driveway you cross a cattle guard to keep the deer out - so slow down or risk losing fillings. There will be limited parking (only 15 cars max) so PLEASE, PLEASE car pool. Nancy asks that we be gone by noon and remember to take EVERYTHING out with you. The restroom is available directly off the home's parking area on the right side of the underpass. Do not access the home, please. This might be the highlight of our summer. Bring your camera and use your influence to get us a nice day.

Tuesdays, June 16 and 23, BOB FLINN'S FARM

903 Sills Mill Rd. Kennett Square PA 19348 cell 303-544-1199
Directions begin on Kennett Pike (RT#52) at the Mendenhall Inn. Go north on #52 for less than ½ mile to light at Hillendale Rd. Turn west ( left) on Hillendale. After 0.9 miles, turn north (right) on Sills Mill Road for 0.8 miles. His farm (you see the barn) is on the right. map

You may drive there although there is a modest amount of parking. map

Tuesdays, July 14 and 21, RUTH THOMPSON'S FARM

301 Green Valley Rd, Coatsville, PA 19320
Directions begin at the intersection of US RT#1 and PA Rt#82 just north of Kennett Square. Go north on #82 for about 4 miles - through the village of Unionville. At Green Valley Rd, turn right for 1.0 mile and you are there (at the bottom of a hill). Her gray barn is left and home on the right - both very close to the road. Avoid her chickens, who seem to roam freely on the road, too. map
